The allure of planes like the P-51, F-86 (and variants), F-15, F-18, F-4, etc really while the actual complexity of a craft actually does vary is that image of simple uniformity that invokes a sense of pride and brotherhood. A Swiss Army knife or a pure interceptor won’t necessarily have that spirit especially if you throw them into the mix. That’s partially a lie because interceptors tend to be sick, anyway. But I think people in National Defense across the Free World get what I mean because they are the ones that directed that into our minds through all this Hollywood and Ace Combat stuff.

It's interesting to note that the Skyhawks that Indonesia got is from Israel, despite having no official diplomatic relations. There is a sort of a rule that I remember, "if it looks right..." This is a good looking plane. It just looks "right". Always liked it.

A beautyfull plane - unfortunatly it lacked the space for anything than basic radar and electronics... fine in good weather clear sky. And THE main reason for the development of the A-4 was that the american politics wanted an american alternative to the "MIG´s" the sovietunion was selling for few money to "3rd world countries" worldwide.

Canada (RCAF) never bought/had A4 Skyhawks. The closest thing is a private Canadian company called Top Aces that operates them as adversary air.

A sophisticated airplane does not, necessarily, mean a complicated design. A simple design that offers state of the art performance should be a design priority. Improvements in maintainability and reliability result in high availability rates and simplify operations.

Always loved the A-4 so under appreciated, a real workhorse.

@15:44 Canada never used this plane in their airforce. It was purchased fairly recently for training by an independent pilot training firm called Top Aces working under contract with the Canadian Armed forces for pilot training after Canada retired their CT155 earlier this year. The A4 was pitched to the RCAF and RCN but the CF5 (F5) was bought instead. This was a political decision to appease (buy votes) in the Montreal area as the CF5 would be built under license by Canadair in St Laurant - a suburb

The F-104 was the ultimate '1 trick pony'. It was design as a high speed interceptor. It was not adaptable, but it looked COOL.

Such a small mention of New Zealand, even though it was our only combat aircraft for a while, and so far our last. We also gave it tons of modernisation, and some nice camos. They saw action in the Malayan emergency as well. So much could’ve been covered there.

I believe Ed Heinemann was a brilliant aeronautical engineer and it is even more amazing considering he never went to university and he was self taught. For this reason, he should be in the same breath as Johnson and Northrop.

What fascinated me about the skywalk is that it was a single engine aircraft. Check powered on the Carrier. The military and the Department of Defense realize it and what navy ships. You need to have 2 engines, but the skywalk was the first besides, the public driven aircraft and the F94. They have one single chat engine
